I want to congratulate Obama on his win.
Whether you agree with his far left policy proposals and his desire to make America into old Europe, or you disagree, his election makes it clear that no serious individual in this country still believes in the tired and long ago discredited notions that the color of a person’s skin has anything to do with his/her ability to achieve their dreams in this country. Obama’s election is a testament to the freedom and opportunity that exist in this country — for ALL people.
It is also clear that Obama was able to capture the imagination and hearts of millions across the country, although I question (strongly) his ability to even begin to meet the expectations that have been built up around his candidacy. The man and his supporters will very quickly learn that socialism costs and words have meaning. Obama will not be able to expand government spending by over a trillion, provide government health care, bankrupt the coal industry, impose his cap & trade program on carbon emissions, AND expand the economy. I seriously doubt that he will even make it through six months without raising taxes.
On the other side, I was thankful that McCain was gracious in his concession speech. However, his rush to concede made it clear that his campaign and his entire candidacy was something that he never really wanted. McCain capped a lackluster campaign by finally showing some pep and vigor as he vaulted to the stage in what seemed a mad rush to concede. You could hear a palpable sense of relief in his voice that he wouldn’t have to worry about the whole presidency thing anymore.
While I am proud of this country and the people’s ability to move beyond the history of racism, I cannot say that I will actively support president-elect Obama. His plans for the country remain the same as they were before the election.
- Massive increases in the size and scope of government
- Equally massive increases in taxes
- Open and unfettered access to abortion at any point in the pregnancy (even extending to infants who are born alive during an abortion attempt)
- Restrictions on our 2nd Amendment rights
- Plans to impose significant restrictions on the economy through the imposition of carbon restrictions
- Pre-emptive and immediate capitulation in the war on terror
- Meeting with state sponsors of terror “without pre-conditions”
- An eagerness to appoint judges that will actively “interpret” and skew the Constitution to fit their hard left, deconstructionist, and post modern views
- and the list goes on and on
Obama’s plans are not even remotely moderate or centrist. He will not govern from the center. He will immediately set out to implement a far left agenda that will have enormous social and economic costs. Obama’s plans do not have the long term interests of this country in mind. He is a politician and not a statesman. Sadly, James Madison said it best in Federalist No. 10 (via patriotpost.us),
“Enlightened statesmen will not always be at the helm.”
For those concerned about our rights and freedoms, Obama’s election signals the beginning of “changes” that will take decades to undo. Unfortunately, he will compound the problems and attacks on freedoms imposed as the Republican party sided with Bush’s “neo-con” adventure over the past eight years.
Bush’s so-called “compassionate conservatism” was an excuse for the Republican Party to support the rapid expansion of the power and size of government at all levels. It was an excuse for them to engage in graft and corruption in ways never seen before. Obama’s far left plans will only make things worse and will only provide the impetus for the Democrats to once again wallow in their own graft, corruption, and payolas.
I just recently finished watching the HBO movie on the life of John Adams and can’t help but think that the Founding Fathers are now spinning in their graves. We have moved so far away from their hopes and dreams for this country that one wonders if they could even recognize the mutated excesses of our current government as coming from the same foundations that they laid two centuries ago.
It therefore falls to those few of us who still care about rights and freedoms to renew the work of the Founding Fathers. We need to renew the Republican Party by cleaning out the dead wood and returning to the work that Reagan left us.
Today’s a new day. Let’s get at it.
